Career planning is an educational process that helps people to analyze their skills and identify the ones they most enjoy using; decide what kind of organization to target; and, find the person who can hire them. Job hunting is only part of career planning. We empower people to direct their careers; we deal with politics in the workplace, salary and settlement negotiations, co-worker conflicts, layoffs, and promotion problems. Career coaching assists people who want to grow in the job, be more effective leaders, or need confidential feedback. We also work with people who want to become self employed.
Many people ages 25 to 70 question whether what they do to earn a living is what they want to do for the rest of their lives – or even for the rest of the year! Others find economic changes altered or eliminated their jobs. During such evaluation periods they seek our help. We offer them strategic planning and marketing assistance.
You set the agenda. We look at your resume, if appropriate. We talk about options. If you need information we show you how to get it. If you need contacts, we teach you how to make them. We help you develop your own job hunting plan. We do no placement but we suggest names of placement firms. In a coaching session, you also set the agenda and we talk about issues: your goals, barriers to goals, and the personalities involved. We examine alternatives and possible consequences.
Fees
This service is available by telephone, email or in person for $150 per hour or $37.50 per quarter hour. There is no upfront fee and you pay only for the time you use. Most sessions are 30 or 45 minutes.
Marilyn Moats Kennedy, founder of Moats/Kennedy, Inc. (formerly Career Strategies) meets with each individual. Career Strategies was founded in June 1975 as a career planning and consulting firm. We deal only with workplace issues. Kennedy’s 40-year career includes university faculty member, author of six books, 18 years as job strategies editor of Glamour magazine and about 100 presentations a year. She holds a BSJ and MSJ from Northwestern University.
After a one-hour session you should have a plan and know what you need to do to implement it. You should also know whether your resume is ready for a successful job hunt. Appointments are scheduled Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
